10 Tips to Improve Your Battery Life In iOS7

tips

Okay, all I have heard since iOS 7’s debut is complaint after complaint! I agree with you all though, iOS 7 comes with a lot of little extras that can drain away that percentage next to your battery. If you are like me and have the iPhone 5, your battery is roughly a year old and needs a little extra help plodding along.

iOS 7 comes with loads of new advantages, but how do they prove useful with a dead battery?

Luckily for me, I have these 10 handy tips that keep my battery, me and Tap This App happy – tips that I will now be sharing with  you.

So read ahead and tell iOS 7 to kiss your batteries ass!

TURN OFF PARALLAX

Yes, parallax is really cool, it’s the one thing I loved to show off when I first got the beta. However, it can be a huge drain on your battery. It’s fun but it doesn’t add any value to your life. Do you need it? No. So you can turn it off by going to Setting > General > Accessbility  and setting Reduce Motion to on.

TURN OFF AIRDROP/BLUETOOTH

We’ve already told you what AirDrop is so by now you should know the lowdown. It’s great when you’re AirDropping, but when you’re not, it’s eating your battery whilst looking for another friend. Swipe up your Control Centre and hit the toggle.

CONTROL YOUR WIFI

Find yourself walking around through town or college and you’re constantly being asked to join Wifi networks? It’s annoying. There’s no need for your phone to keep searching for Wifi, especially when there are no safe networks around. You’ll save yourself some battery life by going to Settings > Wi-Fi > and turn Ask to Join Networks to off. Your phone will now join only the networks it knows.

DISABLE LOCATION SERVICES

Deep down in your phone, somewhere, Apple are tracking your location. They are using this information to improve their maps service, a service for the greater good. Does Candy Crush need to know your location? No. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services to get a full list of every app that uses/needs to know where you are. You will probably turn off around 90% of the apps.

TURN OFF BACKGROUND APP UPDATES

Do you really need your apps updating that badly? More important than your battery life? Most likely not, again, it doesn’t add much value to your life. Drag yourself to Settings > iTunes & App Store scroll down a little and you’ll see Updates under the Automatic Downloads. Flick it off and just remember to visit the App Store every so often to update your apps manually, just like you did with iOS 6.

TURN OFF BACKGROUND APP REFRESHING

Real-time multitasking looks beautiful on the new software. However, it does have a downside, it means running things in the background, things you might not need. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and disable background running for the apps you don’t think are important.

DISABLE AUTO-BRIGHTNESS

Auto-brightness was so useful with iOS 6, but now we have Control Centre. Chances are you won’t even see the benefits of auto-brightness so head over to Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness and flip that switch.

PUSH NOTIFICATIONS

“Allow (Said App) to send you push notification” recognise this? Not all apps need to send you push notifications, they take a lot of power. Go to Settings > Notification Centre and scroll down to the Include section, get rid of the apps you don’t need those pesky notifications from.

DON’T PUSH; FETCH

If your email isn’t that important, or you have a couple of accounts, turn the less important accounts to Fetch instead of Push, which means your phone will go retrieve mail at set intervals instead of having it pushed to you every single time you receive an email. This one is pretty dependent on how often you get emails and how crucial they are, so you’ll have to feel it out, but you can set to fetch in Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendar > Fetch New Data.

TURN OFF SIRI

Let’s be honest. Unless you’re in an advert, nobody actually uses Siri. Let Siri have a little sleep instead of waiting, tongue out, hoping you’ll hold your home button for a little too long. Head over to Settings > General > Siri  and tap that switch.

The New and Improved Siri in iOS7

tips

Siri can now seduce you by simply saying your name.

Screen Shot 2013-09-19 at 20.04.31

First of all, I want to say a huge well done to Apple for maintaining and improving Siri. I have had the voice assistant since it’s inception, since then, it’s improved massively!

Now with a new UI and high quality speech, it’s even more beautiful then ever!

Siri can handle even more tasks in iOS7, here are just a few.

Restaurant reviews

Toggle settings

Search for images

Post to Facebook and Twitter (quickest way without the quick posts from iOS6)

Play voice mail

It’s even got a little brainier, it can now learn pronunciation of difficult names. You can change the gender of your personal assistant through “Settings > General >Siri >Voice Gender”.

I’d say for the past 2 years Siri has been in it’s “beta” stage, just shy of it’s full release. Like a boy about to enter puberty. Well, now with iOS7, Siri has exited it’s “beta” and has become man.

That’s all I can really say about Siri. It’s not a major part of my life but it’s nice to have it there, and when I need to bury a dead body, he has the best suggestions!

What happened to the Tweet and Facebook post buttons in Notification Center?

tips

You searched, found nothing, you searched, you found nothing. It’s a horrible loop. iOS7 takes some getting used to. Don’t worry, Tap This App is here to help you, luckily for you, we have had the pleasure of working with the new OS for several months now.

Throughout today we will be gracing you with the answers you have been searching for. Today we will be your iOS7 God. You’re welcome!

6 notif 7 notif

First thing, I see a lot of searches for the Tweet and Facebook post buttons that were at the top of the Notification Center in iOS6. They allowed you to quickly post what was on your mind with a single swipe down from your iPod, iPad or iPhone. Now, they’re gone, so how can you post or tweet quickly in iOS7? Where did they go?

Harsh truth. They were trashed, thrown into the oblivion never to return. Let’s face it, they didn’t belong in Notification Center, they’re actions. They were out of context.

iOS7 does come with a new control center though, maybe this could be the new home for the quick posting buttons many of us probably never used. Maybe they will be there in the next update, we never know. However, they would fit perfectly, is a way, it’s about control. You control your Facebook, you control your Tweets and what better way to access them then through Control Center.

Need an alternative? Use Siri, simply say “post to Facebook” or “post to Twitter” and then dictate what you want to say. It’s incredibly fast, and if you’re in a situation where you can talk to your iPhone, iPod or iPad you’re sorted! A word of warning, not everyone wants to know what you Tweet though, so for you serial Tweeters, stick to using the App.

There you have it, you now know why Notification Center no longer has quick post updates.

Switch and match your way through more than 300 levels

bubble_nath

Candy Crush is brought to you by King.com Limited who to be quite honest must be dead happy with themselves making allegedly over a million dollars per day! They’ve built themselves quite an impressive game that is basically EVERYWHERE you look. Whether it is a notification on Facebook or your friends face stuck to their iPhone whilst you try to make a conversation with them. I’ll never forget that moment I turned to one of my friends and said what are you playing? “Candy Crush” and that was it, I lost 3 weeks of my life. Candy Crush has over 300 levels and plenty of different types of candies to keep you occupied for months. It’s a lot like Bejewelled (who wasn’t obsessed with this?) where you have to match up candies in order to take them off your screen, any 5 year old could play it.

image
Each level has a different task and a different amount of moves to do it in. Candy Crush is a Freemium app but sometimes requires a little help from your Facebook friends to help you continue, alternatively though you can purchase a pass to skip these blockades or if you’re good you can try your hand at 3 boss like stages which may require you to wait around for lives once in a while. With me being a non-Facebook user that was always a problem but I’d always keep checking back when I knew I could just to get my fix. I’ve recently dragged myself out of the spell that is Candy Crush but eventually I’ll end up going back.

My rating for Candy Crush is a solid 4 taps out of 5, they lose out on a point for all the damn waiting around I had to do!

Candy Crush. That’s all I have to say. When i was younger, i had this woman who was like a mum to me, she fed me, she loved me and cared for me when i was unwell. I say it in past tense because that’s exactly how it is. I introduced my mum to Candy Crush a couple of months back and it’s consumed every moment of our precious time together ever since.

Okay I joke I joke, the time me and my mum spend together could never be shadowed by Candy Crush, but i won’t deny the countless of requests and passes i receive from that one woman, I don’t know where she finds the time. I swear i once received one in the early hours of the morning when she was asleep, which proves she has found an alternative universe where Candy Crush is installed in every human brain in the world (it’s a bit far fetched but i don’t care).

One thing i am jealous of though, the developers are rolling in it now off a basic idea spruced up with candy and colourful images.

I only have 3 taps to give you, but I doubt you care, you’re a millionaire.

LOOKING GOOD NEVER FELT SO EASY

bubble_adam

Let me guess, for years you have dreamt about being a super talented Photoshop user? Being able to make every picture flawless and owning your own model agency?

However you’ve settled for Instagram or other photo editing apps from the App Store, filtering and adding countless layers over pictures of yourself, just to get rid of that spot.
Even worse, adding CamWow filters into your life and allowing them to advertise their logo all over your god damn social presence.
Well my friend, I have brought a message for you from the heavens. A saving grace, a second chance (or your last chance for those who post cringe worthy edits).
Also, it comes as a saviour for me, hopefully in the near future I won’t have to see those awful edits filtering through Facebook and Twitter. Sometimes the edits are just as ugly as the person. Nobody wants to be made of plasticine or rubber. Some of you should take note.
Enough of my troubles, I now present to you the only app you will ever need to make yourself look pretty, beautiful and flawless.

Facetune.

It’s a tuner, but for your face. With this app you can cover those spots, whiten your teeth, change the colour of your eyes and even mask over those wrinkles. It costs £1.99, it’s cheaper than a meal deal from your local Tescos. I strongly suggest you get it, it’s amazing at what it does!

It beats learning Photoshop and it’s much cheaper. You can clear hair, shave your eyebrows, plump up your cheeks and even apply make up.

Beautifully done Lightbricks Ltd. social networks are now filled with model wannabes, you’ve earned a whopping 5 taps!

Clay Jam Review

SAVE THE LAND OF CLAY JAM FROM THE FEARSOME BULLY BEASTS

bubble_adam

Do you remember the days of FarmVille? Who doesn’t remember the days of FarmVille is a better question. Zynga was once a part of our everyday life, when Facebook had a much stronger hold on the lives of all of us, allowing this game company to monopolise the social network. They had every game going for the browser users and the requests came pouring in (I almost deactivated my Facebook until I found out you could block requests – the names of people I won’t mention), constant reminders to water my plants or join my friends in a word game or to stock my shop. These kind of games and requests catapulted Zynga into the stratosphere, making millionaires and investment into loads of other, similar, time consuming browser games. Thankfully, those days are behind us.

Here’s another one you might remember, Draw Something, yes, I thought so. A popular app by an independent developer team who just wanted it’s users to have a good time guessing each others drawings. For some it was a creative outlet, allowing them to showcase their artistic skills to their network of friends. For others it was proof that their ‘F’ in art was genuine. Draw Something was a smash, everybody had it, you couldn’t escape it! Not long passed until it grabbed the attention of the execs over at Zynga, they wanted it, they needed it after all. Their games were losing users daily and their presence in the social arena was becoming dimmer. Fast forward a couple of months and you guessed it, Zynga now owned the game. They added a few new features, people got bored and once again Zynga was on the way down again.

That was until they released this cute, original game. Clay Jam. The entire game is built of clay, every aspect from the buttons to the social connections are all made of the squidgy stuff we used to play with as kids!

The gameplay was basic, all you have to do was help a little clay ball get it’s home back. You did this by guiding it down a hill, destroying other clay badies, each one you squished made you bigger as their clay became part of you, the bigger you are, the badder the enemies you can kill. That simple. It’s safe for me to say that the rest of the game will be more enjoyable if you discover it yourself ;).

CLAY JAM

The app costs nothing and i don’t ever remember seeing it hit the top spot in the App Store.

Well done Zynga Inc. you have another treasure in your hands.

A well deserved update

bubble_update

Well, it’s a dull, rainy day here today, I have a few spare hours at my disposal, a few hours I thought I’d spend with you. At the beginning, I promised myself that I would fully commit myself to this blog, a way for me to showcase some creativity or skill whilst the holidays surrounded me and London was 300 miles away. It pains me to say that i failed myself, and you guys on that promise. A lot has happened since then, both personally and professionally and I feel right now at this moment, a new wave of determination to make this blog a real life thing for me has taken over, a want, a need, to make it maybe one day, a job.

Writing has always been an interest for me, I am passionate about technology and design and was luckily blessed with good taste for both, so the only natural thing for me to do is this. A blog. For you to take in my opinion, maybe argue with it, challenge it or even influence your own. Whatever it does, just reading it will make my day, the other 3 are all bonuses.

Whilst it may seem that my attention has been focused entirely on everything but this blog and the lack of posts are there to back that up yes, but, you have always been there in the back of my mind, time my friend, it’s what’s been against us. Over the last couple of weeks I have been downloading new apps, paid and free, and some old apps that have been updated with new features and even complete redesigns. With that in mind, I will be bringing to you my reviews and thoughts on all that Tap This App has to say about them. Here are just a few of the apps you will be reading about real soon.
